Overview | #91: U2 – “California (There Is No End to Love)” (2014) Top Track | #91: U2 – “California (There Is No End to Love)” (2014)

I found Songs of Innocence to be pretty flat when I reviewed it upon its release, but I have kept listening to “California (There Is No End to Love)” in the months since then. It’s grandly atmospheric and has a great intro with the distorted “Bar Bar Barbara Santa Barbara” emerging out of the rain. The song still doesn’t rank with U2‘s best work or anything — it doesn’t really come together and become something great, and the production is a bit overcooked — but it’s still a fun song and is much better than anything else on the record. I don’t feel like I can leave it off my Top Tracks of 2014 list, so it comes in at #91.

Recommended listening:

  • U2 – “Sunday Bloody Sunday” (1983)
  • U2 – “Pride (In the Name of Love)” (1984)
  • U2 – “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” (1987)
  • U2 – “With or Without You” (1987)
  • U2 – “One” (1991)

Also, be sure to read Stephen Thomas Erlewine’s review of Songs of Innocence on AllMusic if you are unfamiliar with “California (There Is No End to Love)” or U2.
