CBS [1938-1990]
Became Sony Music Entertainment on January 1, 1991.
Formerly CBS Records, Inc. from 1987 to 1990; CBS, Inc. from 1974 to 1987; and Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc. from 1928 to 1974. However, CBS did not enter the recording business until 1938 with American Record Corporation, which became Columbia Recording Corporation in 1947 and then Columbia Records, Inc. in 1954. Given that ownership did not change hands during this entire period of restructuring, it’s easier for database purposes to group this entire period from 1938 to 1990 as “CBS.”
