Originally released on Verve Records in 1963, this monumental title was one of the major recording events of that year. With the LP present in nearly every household in America, selections such as The Girl From Ipanema and Desafinado shot up the charts as the jazz/samba or bossa-nova craze went from fad to phenomenon. Tenor-man Stan Getz, with his velvety breathy tone, had already established his jazz credentials as a member of the 'Four Brothers' sax section with Woody Herman, and then by fronting classic quartet and quintets on recordings for Roost and Clef.

In 1962, after a tour to Brazil that made a distinct impression, Getz decided to record albums with Brazilian flavor, with the fourth of these culminating in the summit meeting of Getz with the real fathers of the Brazilian sound: composer/arranger Antonio Carlos Jobim and singer/guitarist Joao Gilberto. An added treat was the impromptu vocal to The Girl From Ipanema by Gilberto's wife, Astrud, virtually launching her career and garnering her a recording contract on Verve.

Recorded under the tutelage of producer Creed Taylor and engineered by now-superstar producer Phil Ramone, this recording quickly went gold and was inducted into the NARAS Hall of Fame of Recordings.
