This page is an index/directory of Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab’s vinyl releases only. SACDs, Gold CDs, etc. will be added later. (Probably much later, to be honest.)

Some titles have links; some do not. If a title has a link, then it is in the database I am building on this site of audiophile vinyl editions. (It includes more than just MoFi titles, obviously.)

Click on the link to view the edition. On the right hand side of each product page is a long list of metadata gathered from numerous sources including Discogs, AllMusic, etc.

However, there is additional metadata I have personally curated and added that doesn’t really appear in other audiophile databases like SPARS Code and Source.

Because Mobile Fidelity now provides the complete mastering chain information, it is now easy to figure out which titles are AAA vs. digital and which ones are sourced from the original master tape vs. an analog tape copy.

I also thought it would be fun for audiophiles to be able to do this for other labels as well, so I have created a dashboard that you can use to filter in practically infinite ways, which you may access here.

To get started with just the Mobile Fidelity editions in the database, click here.

Read on view the complete list of Mobile Fidelity vinyl editions. I have tried to divide up the list into sections that seemed the most sensible. Use the bulleted list below to “jump” down to a particular section.

Overview: A History

As one of the oldest audiophile reissue labels, Mobile Fidelity has a long and complicated history.

MoFi paved the way for newer labels that followed in its footsteps, many of which still exist (Analogue Productions, Impex), and some of which do not (Classic, DCC).

The first Mobile Fidelity

The first iteration of Mobile Fidelity was founded by Brad Miller in 1958 as Mobile Fidelity Records.

It focused on field recordings of steam engine trains. For more information, check out the Discogs page on Mobile Fidelity Records.

The Second Mobile Fidelity

In 1977, the second iteration of Mobile Fidelity was founded in 1977 (also by Brad Miller) as Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab.

The first four releases (which were cataloged using the now-familiar MFSL abbreviation) also were field recordings.

Original Master Recording

The fifth release (Supertramp’s Crime of the Century) marked the beginning of something new: a third-party reissue of an existing album.

What’s more, a stripe appeared on the jacket that said “Original Master Recording” — an instantly recognizable bit of branding.

Mass-Producing Vinyl

In the heyday of vinyl records, it was standard operating procedure to not use the original master tapes when cutting lacquers because so many needed to be cut to meet demand during an album’s initial chart run.

Instead, copy tapes/production masters were sent to mastering engineers/pressing plants all around the world, thus leaving the original master tapes in good condition for long-term preservation.

Accessing the Master Tapes

When Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab would reissue an album, the album was typically no longer charting, and labels didn’t mind granting them access to the original master tapes.

(In the late 1970s and early 1980s, there was simply no precedent for music that had finished selling ever selling well again — obviously, this changed when legacy artists sold millions of copies of their back catalogs on CD.)

The Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Template

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab established the template for the modern audiophile vinyl reissue: get access to the original master tapes to get the most direct sound possible of albums listeners already know and love.

(Of course, the sound quality of the MFSL reissues from this period has long been debated due to the mastering methodology of the legendary Stan Ricker, who employed a half-speed process and is known for favoring a “smiley EQ” sound.)

MFSL’s Heyday

From 1978 to 1991, over 200 albums were reissued on vinyl by Mobile Fidelity (including 30 “classical” titles spanning classical, jazz and blues).

However, the introduction of cassettes and CDs to the market gradually ate into vinyl sales, and Mobile Fidelity adapted by reissuing albums on cassettes and CDs.

The Third Mobile Fidelity

But Mobile Fidelity did take one last stab at vinyl with the ANADISQ 200 Series, which began in 1994 and sputtered to a close in 1996, with some titles never released. Mobile Fidelity ceased operations in 1999.

In 2001, Jim Davis, the owner of Music Direct, acquired Mobile Fidelity’s assets and the third (and current) iteration of Mobile Fidelity was born.

Further Adaptations

Gradually, some of the hallmarks of the old Mobile Fidelity have been phased out. Namely, half-speed mastering in 2013 and all-analog mastering in 2022.

While dropping these approaches was not necessarily a bad thing in terms of sonic impact, they were nevertheless strongly associated with the Mobile Fidelity brand.

Surviving Scandal

What’s more, MoFi never disclosed to consumers it was phasing out either mastering approach, which led to an infamous scandal in the summer of 2022 and a class-action lawsuit.

In the wake of the scandal and lawsuit, Mobile Fidelity has published the mastering chain of most of its releases going back to 2003, which is when it began reissuing albums on vinyl again.

Looking to the Future

Now that the dust has settled, Mobile Fidelity is still going strong, even if it has shed all-analog purists from its customer base.

The label is still consistently licensing great titles and reissuing them on both vinyl and SACD. Furthermore, Mobile Fidelity now presses its records at Fidelity Record Pressing, a sister company, which opened in 2024.

UltraDisc One-Step Series

This premium product line debuted in 2016 with Santana’s Abraxas; at the time, this kind of audiophile box set was rare, and was a throwback to the original Mobile Fidelity’s UHQR box sets from some 35 years earlier.

The one-step process eliminates two steps of generational loss from the traditional three-step plating process, resulting in a lower noise floor. Read more about the technology here.

Beginning with the fifth entry in the series, albums were pressed on SuperVinyl, Mobile Fidelity’s trademarked name for Neotech’s VR900-D2 compound. Read more about SuperVinyl here.

Only one title, Sunday at the Village Vanguard, is mastered all-analog. However, if you need evidence that all-analog is not the be-all and end-all, please note that 26 editions in this series make the 2026 TAS Super LP list.

Most entries in this series are 45 RPM and pressed on SuperVinyl, but there are exceptions, as you’ll see below.

GAIN 2 Series – Full-Speed Mastered Editions

The GAIN 2 Series spans all the “regular” Mobile Fidelity releases since 2003 that are not part of its budget Silver Label Series or its premium UltraDisc One-Step Series.

The ANADISQ 200 Series releases were cut on the GAIN System, which was acquired (along with Mobile Fidelity’s other assets) by Jim Davis in 2001.

When Mobile Fidelity was relaunched, the vinyl releases were cut on the (appropriately named) GAIN 2 System, designed by Tim De Paravicini. Read more about the system here.

To be clear: these are not mastered at half speed (i.e., they lack the “/2” designation in the dead wax).

Gain 2 Series – SuperVinyl Editions

As Mobile Fidelity began to release its UltraDisc One-Step Series editions on SuperVinyl, it also experimented with doing limited runs of its regular/GAIN 2 editions on SuperVinyl as well.

Most are 33 RPM editions priced at $60, the price for a non-SuperVinyl 45 RPM edition; each of the 45 RPM SuperVinyl editions were priced at $75.

However, it has been a while since MoFi has announced a new SuperVinyl title, and recently even their one-steps have not been pressed on SuperVinyl, so it would appear this series is on pause.

Silver Label Series

This budget line of releases was introduced in 2010 and ran through 2016. Unlike the GAIN 2 Series, these editions were not pressed on 180 gram vinyl, were always cut at 33 RPM, were never half-speed mastered, and came in direct-to-board jackets.

Gain 2 Series – Half-Speed Mastered Editions

When the 21st century Mobile Fidelity relaunched, MoFi continued with its half-speed mastering tradition, but it transitioned from half-speed to full-speed mastering beginning around 2010.

This is around the time Krieg Wunderlich took over as the primary lacquer cutting engineer (Shawn Britton and Rob LoVerde cut mostly at half speed), who has cut mostly at full speed while at MoFi.

Of course, half-speed mastering takes twice as long, so you can double your productivity by switching to full-speed mastering. They also may have just decided half-speed mastering doesn’t sound better.

Whatever the reason, half-speed mastering was phased out long ago in 2013.

ANADISQ 200 Series

This short-lived series was released during the dark ages of vinyl in the mid-1990s. Each release was pressed on 200 grams of vinyl and cut using half speed mastering.

UHQR Series

Mobile Fidelity’s UHQR, or Ultra High Quality Record, box set releases from the early 1980s are quite valuable today.

Classical Series

I actually did not know this series of classical, jazz and blues releases (filed under “Original Master Recording Classical LPs & Cassettes” in MoFi’s archive) even existed until I discovered that MFSL 1-519 makes the TAS list. To the best of my knowledge, these are all of the 500 series editions released during the original Mobile Fidelity days. Please let me know if this is not the case.
